I smelt the fresh mint first, and even though it was a familiar scent, it was an intensity I’d never experienced before. I looked to find it but couldn’t see it.

A group of us were waiting near a village well, to sip the fresh spring water, probably one of the few left on Palestinian land. I turned to find these two elderly women, wearing their old faded thoubs. You could see the faded stitching in places and I smiled to myself, it was almost a metaphor for our existence, worn but still there, glimmering proudly.

I looked down to see they were carrying cloths, folded and bursting with mint, they’d freshly picked. Turns out they were sisters and they said to me “Welcome to Battir- we have the most delicious olives and eggplants here”, “this is the valley of vines”.

I looked around to soak in what was to me, a vestige of the pure and perfect old Palestine that my dad had always told me off. I closed my eyes to smell the mint and vines. I wanted to press it all, indelibly on my heart and soul... Our New Collection, inspired by my time in Palestine.
